India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has warned that countries like the United States and many in Europe could end up “net losers” if they block skilled workers from moving freely. Speaking at the World Annual Conclave 2025 in New Delhi, he said excessive immigration restrictions could backfire economically.
Jaishankar noted that current economic challenges in Western countries are not caused by immigrants but by long-term policy decisions, such as moving businesses abroad. He added that skilled professionals bring benefits to both the countries they leave and the countries they move to, filling gaps in specialized industries.
Highlighting the future, Jaishankar said demand for skilled talent will only increase as the global economy shifts toward technology and advanced manufacturing. He also pointed out that in a democracy, people naturally seek better opportunities, and governments should not prevent this.
For India, he emphasized the importance of creating domestic jobs and opportunities to retain talent, ensuring that growth keeps pace with the supply of skilled professionals.
Jaishankar’s remarks come alongside the focus around global discussions on stricter immigration rules, including proposed higher fees for US work visas. He stressed that instead of blocking skilled talent, countries should recognize its value for economic competitiveness.
