Bharti Airtel has rebranded its ‘Priority Postpaid’ offering as ‘Fast Lane’, a move the telecom operator says is aimed at simplifying the service identity while keeping all existing benefits and plans intact.
The company clarified that the change is purely a rebranding exercise and does not affect the service’s features, pricing or eligibility criteria. Airtel said the new name aligns better with the customer experience offered through the service and follows the completion of the initial launch phase.
Introduced earlier this year, the service is available to select postpaid subscribers and is built on 5G network slicing technology. The technology enables telecom operators to allocate dedicated network resources to specific users, allowing for more consistent connectivity and improved performance during periods of heavy network traffic.
Following the rebranding, Airtel has updated references across its digital platforms, replacing the ‘Priority Postpaid’ label with ‘Fast Lane’. Customers enrolled in the service will continue to receive the same network-related benefits without any changes to their plans.
The offering has generated significant discussion within the telecom sector since its launch. Industry observers and digital rights groups have raised concerns about whether premium network experiences for certain subscribers could conflict with India’s net neutrality regulations, which are designed to ensure equal access to internet services for all users.
Regulatory authorities have also taken note of the issue. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications have sought details about the service, while lawmakers have discussed its implications in parliamentary forums.
Airtel, however, maintains that the service complies fully with existing rules. The company has stated that Fast Lane does not prioritise any specific app, website or online platform and therefore does not violate net neutrality principles. According to Airtel, the service only enhances overall network quality for eligible users and does not reduce the experience of other subscribers.
