Indian-origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon is set to embark on his first mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on July 14, marking a significant milestone in his career and another proud moment for the global Indian community.
Menon will travel aboard Russia’s Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft along with two Russian cosmonauts for an eight-month stay aboard the orbiting laboratory. The mission is expected to focus on scientific research, technology demonstrations and studies aimed at improving human health during long-duration space travel.
A physician, engineer and astronaut, Menon brings a unique blend of expertise to the mission. Before joining NASA’s astronaut corps in 2021, he worked as a flight surgeon supporting astronauts and participated in several commercial spaceflight programmes. His experience in aerospace medicine is expected to play an important role during the expedition.
During his stay on the ISS, Menon and his fellow crew members will conduct experiments in biology, medicine, physics and Earth science. Researchers hope the findings will improve future space missions while also contributing to advances in healthcare and technology on Earth.
NASA said the mission will also help prepare for future human exploration of the Moon and Mars by studying how the human body responds to extended periods in space. Menon is expected to support research on muscle loss, bone health, cardiovascular function and other medical challenges associated with long-duration spaceflight.
Born to Indian and Ukrainian parents, Menon has built an impressive career spanning medicine, engineering and space operations. His journey has inspired many aspiring scientists and engineers, particularly young students interested in careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan will be closely watched by space enthusiasts around the world. Once aboard the ISS, Menon will join an international crew working together on scientific research and station maintenance.
