Bengaluru is set to experience one of its coldest December periods in recent years, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a significant drop in night temperatures over the coming days. Residents can expect minimum temperatures to hover around 12 degrees Celsius, considerably lower than usual for this time of year. Misty or foggy mornings and dry, chilly winds are likely to add to the winter discomfort.
While the southern city does not officially meet the IMD criteria for a “cold wave,” the sharp drop in temperature will be noticeable. Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to take precautions, especially the elderly and children, who are more vulnerable to cold-related illnesses. Wearing warm clothing and avoiding early morning exposure outdoors are among the suggested measures.
The cold spell is not limited to Bengaluru. Across Karnataka, several regions, particularly in the north, may see night temperatures fall as low as 10 degrees Celsius. The IMD has issued alerts for these areas, highlighting the need for caution during travel and outdoor activities.
This chilly phase is expected to last for a few days, with meteorologists noting that clear skies and low humidity are contributing to the sharp dip in temperatures. The conditions may also cause localized fog, which could disrupt road and air travel in some districts.
Experts say that such cold spells are becoming increasingly frequent in southern India due to shifting weather patterns and cooler northern winds reaching the region. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates, maintain warm indoor conditions, and limit exposure during early mornings and late nights.
With winter biting hard, Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka will feel a pronounced chill, reminding citizens to prepare for unusually cold December days and nights.
