BJP wins West Bengal for the first time

PM thanks voters, says BJP will work for progress and stability in state

After a historic victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party is now preparing to form its first-ever government in the state. The win marks a major political shift, ending over a decade of rule by the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee.

With a clear majority in the 294-member Assembly, the BJP has secured a strong mandate from voters. The focus has now moved from election results to government formation, with key decisions expected in the coming days. One of the biggest questions is who will take over as the next chief minister. Senior leaders such as Suvendu Adhikari and Samik Bhattacharya are among the names being discussed. The final decision is likely to come from the party’s central leadership.

Responding to the victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of West Bengal for their support and called the result a “mandate for change and development.” He said the BJP would work towards improving infrastructure, creating jobs, and ensuring better governance in the state. Modi also praised party workers for their efforts and emphasised that the new government would focus on inclusive growth for all sections of society.

The BJP’s win is being seen as a breakthrough in a state where regional parties have traditionally held power. The party’s campaign, which focused on development, governance, and expanding its grassroots reach, appears to have resonated with voters across regions.

For Mamata Banerjee and the TMC, the loss marks a significant setback. Having ruled the state since 2011, the party now moves into the opposition, facing the challenge of rebuilding its base and strategy.

As the BJP prepares to take charge, expectations are high. The new government is expected to prioritise infrastructure development, job creation, and law and order, while also addressing local concerns that shaped voter sentiment during the election.

There are also broader political implications. The victory strengthens the BJP’s presence in eastern India and adds to its growing influence across states. At the same time, it reshapes the opposition landscape, with TMC likely to rethink its role at both state and national levels.
