Canada speeds up PR for 33,000 temporary workers

One-time plan to help in-country workers settle permanently

Canada has announced a major step to make it easier for thousands of temporary workers to become permanent residents. Under a one-time initiative, the government plans to fast-track permanent residency (PR) for up to 33,000 workers who are already living and working in the country.

The move focuses on people who are already part of Canada’s workforce—those who have jobs, pay taxes, and are settled in local communities. Instead of opening a new application process, the government will speed up decisions on applications that are already in the system.

Officials say this approach will help workers who have already built their lives in Canada move more quickly to permanent status. It also ensures that businesses and communities do not lose workers they depend on.

This plan is part of a broader shift in Canada’s immigration policy. In recent years, the country has started focusing more on retaining people who are already inside Canada rather than bringing in large numbers of new applicants from abroad. The idea is to make better use of the existing workforce and address labour shortages more effectively.

The initiative is expected to benefit workers across different sectors, especially in smaller towns and rural areas where there is a strong need for labour. Many of these workers have been in Canada for years on temporary permits and are already contributing to the economy.

However, officials have made it clear that this is a limited, one-time measure. No new applications will be accepted under this plan, and only those already in the system will be considered.
