CBI SIT to probe RG Kar case

Special investigation team to examine allegations of attempts to suppress evidence in the case

The Calcutta High Court has directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate allegations of attempts to suppress information and evidence linked to the RG Kar rape and murder case.

The order comes as the court seeks a detailed probe into claims that there may have been efforts to hide facts or interfere with the handling of the case after the incident came to light. The latest direction expands the scope of investigation beyond the crime itself and focuses on allegations surrounding the conduct and handling of the matter.

The case involves the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an incident that had triggered widespread public outrage and protests across West Bengal and other parts of the country. The case had raised serious concerns over safety at workplaces and the handling of sensitive investigations.

According to reports, the court expressed concern over allegations that facts connected to the incident may have been concealed or that attempts could have been made to influence the investigation process. The SIT has been asked to specifically examine these claims and submit findings before the court.

The case has remained under intense public and legal scrutiny since it first emerged, leading to protests by doctors, healthcare workers and civil society groups seeking accountability and transparency. Several demonstrations had also called for stronger security measures at hospitals and educational institutions.
