General NS Raja Subramani named Chief of Defence Staff

New defence chief pledges greater military integration and modernisation

General NS Raja Subramani has taken charge as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Anil Chauhan and assuming the country’s top military post.

On taking over, General Subramani said his focus would be on strengthening coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force, boosting indigenous defence capabilities and driving innovation across the armed forces. He reaffirmed his commitment to the government’s vision of greater jointness and self-reliance in defence.

As CDS, he will also serve as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs and play a key role in shaping India’s military strategy and reforms. One of his major responsibilities will be advancing the integration of the three services to improve operational efficiency and preparedness.

General Subramani brings decades of military experience to the position. Before becoming CDS, he served as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat and held several senior appointments, including Vice Chief of the Army Staff and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command.

He takes over at a time when India is pushing ahead with military modernisation and structural reforms aimed at creating a more integrated fighting force. Defence experts say his experience across operational and strategic roles will be valuable in carrying forward these efforts.

The CDS serves as the government’s principal military adviser and acts as a bridge between the armed forces and policymakers. General Subramani succeeds General Anil Chauhan, who completed his tenure after overseeing important initiatives related to tri-service cooperation and defence transformation.
