Himanta Biswa Sarma steps down as Assam CM

New BJP-led government likely to take oath in Assam after May 11

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday resigned from his post following the BJP-led NDA’s massive victory in the Assembly elections, paving the way for the formation of a new government in the state.

Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati along with his council of ministers. The Governor accepted the resignation and asked him to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government takes charge.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be held after May 11, with May 12 likely to be the final date. BJP leaders said the delay is due to internal meetings and consultations before formally electing the BJP Legislature Party leader.

Senior BJP leaders and central observers are expected to visit Assam in the coming days to oversee the process. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony, most likely after May 11.

The BJP-led NDA secured a comfortable victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections, crossing the majority mark with ease. Allies, including the AGP, have already backed Himanta Biswa Sarma for another term as Chief Minister.

Speaking after resigning, Sarma said the party leadership would soon take a final call on the new government and cabinet formation.
