Indian sailor dies in Iran tanker attack

Six other Indian crew members injured during this attack in Strait of Hormuz waters

An Indian sailor was killed and six other Indian crew members were injured after Iranian missile strikes hit two UAE-flagged oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, sharply escalating tensions in one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

According to officials, the attack targeted the commercial vessels while they were transiting the strategic waterway. The strikes caused significant damage to the tankers and triggered onboard fires, forcing emergency response teams to launch rescue operations.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Indian national and said it is in close contact with Iranian and UAE authorities to ensure medical assistance and the safe evacuation of the injured crew members. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is also coordinating with local officials and the shipping company to facilitate support for those affected.

The six injured Indians are receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries. Officials said their condition is stable, although some remain under close medical observation.

The UAE strongly condemned the attack, calling it a serious violation of international law and a threat to the safety of commercial shipping. It urged the international community to take steps to protect freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that carries nearly a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil trade.

The latest incident has raised fresh concerns over maritime security in the Gulf, with several countries closely monitoring developments. Shipping companies are also reviewing security measures as tensions continue to rise in the region.

India has reiterated the importance of ensuring the safety of civilian vessels and seafarers, while calling for restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation. The government said the welfare of Indian nationals working on international ships remains a top priority.
