India has officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar urging member nations to back the country’s bid for a stronger role in global peace and security.
The campaign was launched at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday in the presence of diplomats, senior UN officials and representatives from member states. Addressing the gathering, Jaishankar said India’s approach to global challenges is rooted in dialogue, cooperation and respect for international law, making it a reliable partner in an increasingly uncertain world.
Highlighting India’s growing global role, the minister said the country has consistently worked to amplify the voice of developing nations while contributing to international peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. He said India’s experience in handling complex global issues positions it well to contribute meaningfully to the Security Council.
Jaishankar also reiterated India’s long-standing call for reforms in the UN Security Council, saying the current structure no longer reflects present-day geopolitical realities. He stressed that the Council must become more representative, credible and effective by giving greater voice to developing countries, particularly from Asia, Africa and Latin America.
India has served as a non-permanent member of the Security Council eight times, most recently during the 2021-22 term, when it chaired key discussions on maritime security, counter-terrorism, peacekeeping and technology. During that tenure, India repeatedly advocated reforms to make the UN more responsive to emerging global challenges.
The election for the 2028-29 non-permanent seat is expected to take place in 2027 at the UN General Assembly, where member states will vote to choose countries representing different regional groups. India is expected to seek broad international support over the next two years through sustained diplomatic outreach.
Officials said the campaign reflects India’s ambition to play a larger role in shaping global governance at a time when the world faces conflicts, climate concerns, economic uncertainty and growing geopolitical tensions. With its expanding diplomatic footprint and active engagement in multilateral forums, New Delhi hopes to secure another term on the Security Council and strengthen its voice on issues affecting global peace, security and development.
