Nepal is witnessing a wave of youth-led protests after the death of a transport driver who died from burn injuries following an alleged self-immolation attempt. The incident has sparked widespread anger, with thousands of young people taking to the streets to protest against forced evictions, poor governance and what they describe as official indifference.
The protests began after the driver, who had reportedly set himself on fire during a demonstration against an eviction drive, succumbed to his injuries in hospital. His death quickly became a rallying point for students, transport workers and youth groups, who say the tragedy reflects growing frustration over the government’s handling of public grievances.
Large demonstrations have been reported in Kathmandu and several other cities, with protesters demanding accountability from authorities and better protection for ordinary citizens. Many are also questioning the actions of local officials during recent eviction drives that displaced street vendors and informal workers.
Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has come under intense criticism, with protesters accusing the city administration of adopting harsh measures without offering proper rehabilitation or alternative livelihoods. The mayor has defended the civic body’s actions, saying encroachments had to be removed to improve urban management, but acknowledged the need for a more humane approach.
The demonstrations have been driven largely by young people, many from Generation Z, who have mobilised through social media platforms. Protesters are calling for transparency, justice for the deceased driver and reforms aimed at making governance more responsive to citizens’ concerns.
Police have deployed additional personnel in sensitive areas to maintain law and order. While most protests have remained peaceful, there have been isolated clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
Political observers say the unrest highlights deeper public dissatisfaction over unemployment, rising living costs and a perceived lack of accountability among elected representatives. Many believe the protests have evolved beyond a single incident and now represent broader demands for change.
The Nepal government has appealed for calm and urged people to avoid violence while promising to examine the circumstances surrounding the driver’s death. As demonstrations continue, authorities face growing pressure to address public concerns and restore confidence through dialogue and meaningful action.
