Instagram targets younger users with ‘Instants’

Platform expands disappearing content features amid changing user habits

Instagram has introduced a new feature called “Instants”, allowing users to share photos that disappear after being viewed once. The feature is designed to make conversations feel more private, casual and spontaneous, especially among younger users who prefer temporary content over permanent social media posts.

The feature works through Instagram’s direct messaging section. Users can send one-time photos to friends, and the images automatically disappear after they are opened. In some cases, Instagram may also notify the sender if the receiver takes a screenshot of the image.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, said the feature is part of the platform’s effort to encourage more natural interactions between users. According to the company, many people now prefer sharing quick moments privately instead of posting carefully edited content publicly on their profile or stories.

Unlike regular Instagram posts, which stay on profiles permanently, or stories that remain visible for 24 hours, Instants is focused entirely on temporary communication. The company believes this will reduce pressure on users who do not want every shared moment to remain online permanently.

Technology experts say social media habits have changed significantly in recent years. Many younger users now spend more time in direct messages and private group chats instead of public feeds. This shift has forced platforms like Instagram to focus more on messaging, disappearing content and close-friend interactions.

The feature also increases Instagram’s competition with Snapchat, which became popular largely because of disappearing messages and temporary photo sharing. It is also said that Meta is trying to strengthen Instagram’s private communication tools to keep younger audiences engaged on the platform.
