Netanyahu’s UAE visit claim fuels regional debate

A claim by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office that he secretly visited the United Arab Emirates during the recent Iran conflict has sparked fresh diplomatic controversy in the Middle East.

According to Israeli officials, Netanyahu travelled quietly to the UAE during the height of the conflict and held talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The visit was described by Israel as an important diplomatic development during a tense period in the region.

However, the UAE quickly rejected the claim. Emirati officials said no such secret meeting had taken place and insisted that relations between the UAE and Israel are handled openly under existing diplomatic agreements. The UAE foreign ministry called reports of a covert visit “baseless.”

The conflicting statements have drawn global attention because they come at a time when tensions in West Asia remain extremely high. The ongoing conflict involving Iran has increased concerns about regional security, oil supplies and the possibility of a wider confrontation.

Israel and several Gulf nations, including the UAE, have strengthened ties in recent years after signing the Abraham Accords in 2020. Since then, both countries have expanded cooperation in trade, technology and security. But public opinion in the region remains sensitive, especially during periods of military conflict involving Iran and Palestine.

Reports of the alleged visit also led to speculation about possible behind-the-scenes coordination between Israel and Gulf countries during the Iran conflict. Some media reports suggested Israeli security officials made several trips to the region during the war period, although these claims have not been independently confirmed.

Iran reacted sharply to the reports. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned countries in the region against cooperating with Israel against Tehran and said Iran was closely monitoring such developments.

The UAE, meanwhile, has tried to maintain a careful balance in its foreign policy by keeping diplomatic ties with Israel while also engaging with regional powers including Iran.
