Iran begins Khamenei funeral ceremonies

Tehran says US shared intelligence on alleged Israeli assassination plans during conflict

Iran began funeral ceremonies today for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with thousands of mourners gathering in Tehran amid tight security and heightened tensions across West Asia. The ceremonies, expected to continue over several days, have drawn senior political leaders, military officials and foreign dignitaries, marking one of the country’s most significant public events in recent years.

Authorities have deployed extensive security arrangements around key venues as large crowds pay their final respects. The funeral comes at a sensitive time, with Iran still recovering from its recent military confrontation with Israel and facing growing uncertainty over regional stability, its nuclear programme and future diplomatic engagement.

Even as the country mourns its top leader, a fresh political claim has added another layer of intrigue to the ongoing crisis. Iran has alleged that the United States warned Tehran about an alleged Israeli plot to assassinate several senior Iranian leaders during the recent conflict.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Washington passed on intelligence indicating that Israel was planning attacks on key political figures. According to Iranian officials, those allegedly targeted included Araghchi himself and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The warning, they claimed, enabled Iranian authorities to strengthen security measures and prevent the alleged assassination attempts.

The claim is particularly striking given the decades-long hostility between Iran and the United States. While Tehran says the communication highlights the existence of discreet backchannel contacts even during periods of intense conflict, neither Washington nor Israel has publicly confirmed the allegation.

The disclosure follows weeks of escalating hostilities, during which Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities prompted retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran. Although a ceasefire has since reduced direct military action, the situation remains fragile, with fears that fresh incidents could trigger another round of confrontation.
