Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved why he remains Portugal’s biggest match-winner, scoring the decisive goal as his side came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 and book a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
Croatia made the brighter start and stunned Portugal by taking the lead in the first half through Joško Gvardiol, who headed home from a set-piece to put his side in control. The Croatian defence then frustrated Portugal for long spells, limiting clear chances and taking their narrow advantage into the break.
Portugal emerged with greater intensity after halftime and found the equaliser when Francisco Conceição’s dangerous delivery forced an own goal from Croatia defender Josip Šutalo. The goal shifted the momentum completely, with Roberto Martínez’s side piling pressure on a tiring Croatian defence.
The breakthrough arrived midway through the second half when Ronaldo was in the right place to convert from close range after a well-worked move inside the box. The goal marked another landmark moment for the 41-year-old forward, who continues to deliver on football’s biggest stage despite entering the final years of his remarkable career.
Croatia refused to surrender and believed they had forced extra time in stoppage time when they found the back of the net. Celebrations, however, were cut short after a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review ruled the goal out for offside, leaving Croatian players devastated and Portugal celebrating qualification.
The dramatic finish sparked emotional scenes at the final whistle. Ronaldo embraced teammates and supporters after another decisive performance, while several Croatian players were left in tears following their heartbreaking exit.
Portugal’s comeback victory keeps alive their hopes of lifting a second major international trophy under Roberto Martínez. The team will now face Spain in a highly anticipated Round of 16 clash, setting up an all-Iberian showdown featuring two of Europe’s strongest sides.
