Japan has temporarily stopped imports of Indian mangoes after concerns were raised during inspections related to export treatment procedures.
According to reports, Japanese authorities found issues linked to the mandatory treatment process used before mangoes are exported from India. The concerns reportedly involved Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT), a process required to remove pests and ensure fruit safety before shipment.
The suspension has affected popular Indian mango varieties such as Alphonso and Kesar, which are widely exported to Japan during the mango season.
Officials said the issue was detected during inspection checks, leading Japanese authorities to halt imports until proper standards and procedures are confirmed. Reports suggest the action is temporary and discussions are ongoing between Indian and Japanese authorities to resolve the matter quickly.
India exports premium mango varieties to several international markets, including Japan, the United States, and countries in Europe and the Middle East. Japan is considered an important market for high-quality Indian mangoes because of strong demand and premium pricing.
Exporters and traders have expressed concern over the suspension, saying it could impact shipments during the peak mango export season. Some exporters fear losses if the issue is not resolved soon.
Indian authorities are reportedly working with exporters and treatment facilities to identify the problem and ensure compliance with Japanese import standards. Officials are also expected to hold discussions with Japanese authorities to restore exports at the earliest.
The Vapour Heat Treatment process is an important requirement for mango exports to countries with strict agricultural import rules. The process helps eliminate pests and fruit flies that could affect local agriculture in importing countries.
Despite the temporary setback, exporters remain hopeful that shipments will resume after technical issues and inspection concerns are addressed.
