Veteran New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for playing Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park films, has died at the age of 78, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned more than five decades. His family said he passed away peacefully in Sydney, surrounded by loved ones. They described his death as sudden and unexpected, adding that he had remained cancer-free following treatment for a rare form of blood cancer.
Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand as a child and began his acting career in the 1970s. He rose to international fame with memorable performances in My Brilliant Career, The Piano, Dead Calm and The Hunt for Red October. However, it was his portrayal of the fearless palaeontologist in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park that made him a global household name.
Over the years, Neill built a reputation as one of cinema’s most versatile actors, effortlessly moving between Hollywood blockbusters, independent films and television dramas. His credits included Event Horizon, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the hit series Peaky Blinders. He earned several award nominations during his career and was knighted by New Zealand in 2022 for his services to acting.
Tributes poured in from across the world following the announcement. Filmmakers, actors and political leaders remembered Neill as a gifted performer, generous colleague and warm-hearted friend. Steven Spielberg, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Cillian Murphy were among those who honoured his contribution to cinema, while New Zealand leaders praised his role in showcasing the country’s creative talent to global audiences.
Away from the screen, Neill was also a passionate environmentalist and winemaker, often sharing glimpses of his vineyard and rural life with fans. He is survived by his four children and grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of film lovers.
