K Annamalai to quit BJP, launch new movement

Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief is reportedly planning a new political platform in the state

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai is likely to quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and launch a new political movement in the state, according to sources. The development could mark a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics, where Annamalai has emerged as one of the BJP’s most prominent faces in recent years.

Sources said the former IPS officer is expected to meet senior BJP leaders in Delhi, including party president Nitin Nabin and other top functionaries, before making a final announcement on his future. When questioned by reporters before leaving for Delhi, Annamalai declined to comment in detail and said he would speak on the issue within two days.

Reports indicate that Annamalai believes there is limited political space and opportunity for him within the BJP. Sources also claimed that the party offered him a Rajya Sabha seat, but he declined the proposal.

According to reports, Annamalai may initially launch a people’s movement or volunteer-based organisation before formally entering electoral politics through a new party. The proposed platform is expected to focus on Tamil Nadu-centric issues while maintaining a national outlook. Some reports suggest it could promote a redefined version of Dravidian politics, described by supporters as “Dravidian 2.0”, combining regional aspirations with broader national interests.

Speculation about Annamalai’s next move has intensified following the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which the BJP performed poorly and won only one seat. Political observers have linked his reported dissatisfaction to differences over the BJP’s alliance strategy and seat-sharing arrangements in the state.
