Kerala: Severe Flooding in Idukki Amid Torrential Rains; One Dead

The Mullaperiyar Dam, located on the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, has been a focal point of concern

Kerala is grappling with severe flooding and landslides triggered by continuous heavy rains, especially in Idukki district. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts, forecasting continued heavy rainfall and thunderstorms due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea and the Lakshadweep region.

In Idukki, towns such as Kumily, Nedumkandam, and Kattappana have experienced significant flooding, leading to the evacuation of around 45 families. The heavy rainfall has caused rivers to swell, inundating homes and agricultural lands. A 66-year-old man died in a mudslide accident in Vellaramkunnu, highlighting the severe impact of the weather conditions.

The Mullaperiyar Dam, located on the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, has been a focal point of concern. The dam’s water level rose to 139.35 feet, prompting the release of 9,403 cusecs of water towards Idukki district in Kerala, with an additional 1,400 cusecs directed towards Tamil Nadu. This release has contributed to the flooding in downstream areas.

Other dams in the region, including Kallarkutty, Malankara, and Kallar, have also been opened to manage the rising water levels. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued red alerts for these dams, advising residents along riverbanks to remain vigilant and prepared for potential evacuations.

The heavy rains have not only caused flooding but have also led to significant agricultural damage. In Malappuram, highland fields have been inundated, resulting in the loss of crops and livelihoods for many farmers.

Authorities are actively coordinating rescue and relief operations. Rescue teams have been deployed to assist affected residents, and relief shelters have been set up in various districts. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and has advised the public to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions.
