Kolkata hosted grand International Yoga Day event

Prime Minister highlighted yoga's role in health, harmony and peace

Thousands of people gathered at Kolkata’s iconic Red Road as Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations, reaffirming India’s commitment to promoting yoga as a tool for health, well-being and global harmony.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from people of all age groups, including students, yoga practitioners, security personnel and members of the public. Participants performed various yoga asanas in unison, creating a vibrant display of fitness and mindfulness in the heart of the city.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described yoga as a powerful force that connects individuals, communities and nations. He said the ancient Indian practice has evolved into a global movement that promotes physical health, mental balance and inner peace. The Prime Minister noted that yoga is no longer confined to any region, culture or language and is now embraced by millions across the world.

PM Modi emphasised that yoga offers practical solutions to many modern-day challenges, including stress, lifestyle disorders and mental health concerns. He encouraged people to make yoga a regular part of their daily lives, stating that even a few minutes of practice can contribute significantly to overall well-being.

He also highlighted the growing international acceptance of yoga since the United Nations declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga. He said the annual observance reflects the world’s recognition of India’s ancient knowledge and its relevance in contemporary society.

Celebrations were held simultaneously across India and in several countries, with yoga sessions organised at schools, community centres, public parks and cultural venues. From major cities to remote towns, people came together to participate in the global event.

Participants at Kolkata’s programme described the experience as both energising and inspiring. Many said yoga had helped them improve their physical fitness, reduce stress and maintain a healthier lifestyle.
