Lokpal Plans to Buy Seven BMWs, Triggers Public Outcry

Anti-corruption watchdog plans to spend ₹5 crore on luxury sedans for its members, drawing public scrutiny over necessity and optics

The Lokpal of India, the nation’s anti-corruption watchdog, has announced a tender to procure seven BMW 330 Li luxury sedans, each valued at around ₹70 lakh, totaling nearly ₹5 crore.

The vehicles are intended for the Chairperson and six other members of the body, including former Supreme Court Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar.

The tender includes a five-year maintenance contract and mandatory driver training, with delivery expected within 30 days of the supply order.

The decision has sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning the need for high-end cars for an institution tasked with promoting transparency and accountability.
