Myanmar has assured India that its territory will not be allowed to be used for activities that threaten India’s security interests, reaffirming its commitment to cooperation on border security and counter-insurgency efforts.
The assurance was conveyed by Naypyidaw’s military-led government during high-level interactions between officials of the two neighbouring countries amid ongoing concerns over insurgent groups operating along the India-Myanmar border. According to reports, Myanmar’s authorities emphasised that they remain committed to preventing anti-India elements from using their territory to carry out activities against India.
The issue is particularly significant for India’s northeastern states, which share a long and porous border with Myanmar. Over the years, several insurgent groups active in the Northeast have been accused of maintaining camps and bases in remote areas across the border. India has repeatedly raised concerns about such activities and has sought greater cooperation from Myanmar in tackling cross-border security threats.
Myanmar’s assurance comes at a time when both countries are working to strengthen coordination on border management, intelligence sharing and security cooperation. Officials from the two sides have held discussions on maintaining peace and stability in border regions and ensuring that insurgent groups do not exploit the challenging terrain to carry out operations.
Naypyidaw’s military-led government also underlined the importance of maintaining friendly relations with India and acknowledged New Delhi’s role as a key regional partner. India has continued engagement with Myanmar despite the country’s political turmoil following the military takeover in 2021, citing strategic and security considerations.
Apart from security cooperation, the two countries are collaborating on connectivity and infrastructure projects aimed at improving trade and regional integration. These include initiatives designed to enhance links between India’s Northeast and Southeast Asia through Myanmar.
Security experts say the latest assurance is important for India, particularly as it seeks to address insurgency-related challenges in the Northeast and strengthen stability along the border.
