A 20-year-old Indian student accused of killing his 19-year-old American girlfriend in Tucson, Arizona, has been arrested in Germany while allegedly trying to flee to India. The arrest followed coordination between Tucson police, the FBI and German authorities and has now set the stage for his extradition to the United States.
The suspect, identified as Varun Batchigari, was arrested after arriving in Germany on a flight from Tucson. According to the Tucson Police Department, he was planning to continue travelling to India when authorities intercepted him. He is facing charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the death of Julissa Rubi Salazar.
Batchigari was a business analytics student at the University of Arizona. Police allege that he killed Salazar at her apartment in Tucson on August 6. The investigation began after Salazar’s family became concerned about her and requested a welfare check.
Emergency crews reached the apartment at around 4 pm and found Salazar unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later found injuries consistent with a homicide, including marks and scratches around her neck, and police alleged that she had been strangled.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery of Salazar’s body raised concerns almost immediately. Investigators allege that after the killing, Batchigari took Salazar’s mobile phone and credit cards. He then allegedly sent messages to her mother while pretending to be Salazar.
Those messages reportedly contributed to the family’s concern and prompted them to request the welfare check that led authorities to the apartment. Police subsequently identified Batchigari as the main suspect and obtained an arrest warrant.
Rather than remaining in Tucson, investigators say Batchigari travelled to Tucson International Airport and boarded a flight to Germany. His alleged plan was to continue from Germany to India. The international flight route, however, was cut short when authorities in Germany detained him following a request from US investigators.
The Tucson Police Department said its investigators worked with the FBI’s Tucson office and the FBI legal attaché office in Berlin to locate and detain the suspect. He was taken into custody after arriving in Germany, preventing him from continuing his journey to India.
Batchigari is now expected to face extradition proceedings before being returned to Arizona. Once extradited, he is expected to be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex and face the charges filed against him in connection with Salazar’s death.
The case has also brought attention to allegations about Batchigari’s previous conduct. According to the arrest warrant and reports citing investigators, witnesses described earlier violent behaviour and an alleged history of domestic violence.
Investigators said Salazar had moved out after experiencing problems in the relationship and was planning to end it. The warrant reportedly contains allegations from witnesses about previous incidents involving Batchigari.
There was also an earlier assault case involving Batchigari. According to court records cited by media reports, an assault case alleging knowingly causing injury had been filed in Pima County Court in May. Another witness reportedly told investigators about an alleged sexual assault but said the incident had not been reported to police. These remain allegations and have not been established as facts in court.
Reports have also raised questions about Batchigari’s circumstances in the United States before the alleged murder. He had reportedly been expelled from the University of Arizona following a fight and had recently lost his job. Federal records cited by media outlets indicated that he remained in lawful immigration status at the time of the alleged killing.
The murder investigation has now become an international case involving law enforcement agencies in the United States and Germany. The quick coordination between Tucson police, the FBI and German authorities prevented the suspect from reaching India and allowed investigators to secure his arrest outside the US.
For Salazar’s family, the investigation began with a welfare check and quickly developed into a homicide case involving an international manhunt. The 19-year-old was a student and had been living away from home in Tucson.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death, including the events leading up to August 6 and the suspect’s movements after leaving the apartment.
The next major step will be the extradition process. Batchigari remains in Germany while authorities work towards his return to Arizona. Once he is brought back, prosecutors will proceed with the criminal case in Pima County.
The arrest in Germany has brought an end to the immediate international search for the suspect, but the investigation into the Tucson murder is far from over. Authorities will now focus on building the case, examining evidence from Salazar’s apartment and reconstructing Batchigari’s movements before and after her death.
The case is likely to remain under close scrutiny as US authorities pursue the extradition of the Indian national and seek to establish what happened inside the Tucson apartment before Salazar was found dead.
