Rajpal Yadav gets three-month jail term

Delhi High Court upholds cheque bounce conviction, denies probation to actor

Actor Rajpal Yadav has been sentenced to three months in jail after the Delhi High Court upheld his conviction in a cheque bounce case. The court also refused to grant him the benefit of probation, saying the offence could not be treated lightly.

The case relates to dishonoured cheques issued by Yadav during a financial transaction. A trial court had earlier convicted the actor under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which deals with cheque bounce offences. Challenging that verdict, Yadav had approached the Delhi High Court, seeking relief from the conviction and a more lenient sentence.

After hearing the matter, the High Court upheld the trial court’s decision and ruled that there was no reason to interfere with the conviction. The court also rejected Yadav’s plea for probation, observing that such offences affect the credibility of financial transactions and public confidence in the banking system.

The court noted that cheque dishonour cases cannot be viewed as minor disputes because they have serious commercial and legal consequences. It said the punishment should act as a deterrent and reinforce the importance of honouring financial commitments.

Rajpal Yadav is one of Bollywood’s best-known comic actors and has appeared in numerous Hindi films over the past two decades. The verdict has attracted widespread attention because of his popularity in the film industry.
