Cristiano Ronaldo’s FIFA World Cup journey has come to an emotional end after Portugal were knocked out by Spain in the semifinals, bringing the veteran forward’s final appearance at football’s biggest tournament to a close.
Following the defeat, the 41-year-old admitted that this was his last World Cup but said he was leaving the competition with “a clear conscience.” Ronaldo said he had given everything for Portugal throughout his international career and had no regrets despite the disappointing result.
The Portuguese captain was visibly emotional after the final whistle as Spain celebrated their place in the World Cup final. Images of Ronaldo leaving the pitch with tears in his eyes quickly spread across social media, reflecting the heartbreak of a player who has spent more than two decades representing his country on the biggest stage.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said it was not the right moment to decide whether he would continue playing for Portugal. He explained that emotions were still running high and that any decision about his international future would come later, after taking time to reflect.
Throughout his international career, Ronaldo has become Portugal’s most decorated footballer, setting records for appearances and goals while leading the team to major trophies, including the UEFA European Championship and the UEFA Nations League. However, lifting the FIFA World Cup remained the one major honour that eluded him.
Spain’s victory ended Portugal’s hopes of reaching another World Cup final and highlighted the changing of generations in international football. While younger players now take centre stage, Ronaldo’s influence on the game remains unquestioned.
Although Portugal’s World Cup campaign ended in disappointment, Ronaldo said he remained proud of the team’s effort and grateful for the support he has received throughout his career.
