Trump sees progress in Ukraine peace talks

Talks with Putin and Zelenskyy raise hopes for ending the war soon

US President Donald Trump has said a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war may be closer than many people believe, following separate conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. His remarks come as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict continue to gather pace.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said recent discussions with both leaders had been constructive and suggested there was growing willingness to explore a negotiated settlement. While he did not reveal specific details of the talks, he expressed confidence that progress was being made behind the scenes.

Trump also said he expects to meet Zelenskyy in Türkiye in the coming days if schedules align. The proposed meeting is seen as another opportunity to discuss possible steps towards a ceasefire and a broader peace agreement. Türkiye has continued to position itself as an important mediator in efforts to bring the two sides together.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has claimed thousands of lives and forced millions of people to flee their homes. Despite several rounds of negotiations over the past three years, fighting has continued across multiple regions, with both sides maintaining firm positions on key issues.

Trump acknowledged that significant differences remain but insisted there are signs that negotiations are moving in a positive direction. He said the situation is “closer than people realise” and stressed that ending the war remains one of his administration’s major foreign policy priorities.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has publicly indicated that a breakthrough agreement is imminent. However, officials from both countries have continued diplomatic contacts through international mediators, while discussions over humanitarian measures and potential ceasefire arrangements remain ongoing.
