Shwetha Menon resigns as AMMA crisis deepens

Entire executive committee resigns after stormy meeting over financial concerns

The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has been plunged into fresh uncertainty after president Shwetha Menon and the organisation’s entire 17-member executive committee resigned following a turbulent annual general body meeting in Kochi. The dramatic development comes amid growing internal disagreements and questions over the association’s functioning.

The resignations followed hours of heated discussions during the meeting, where members reportedly raised concerns about the annual report and the organisation’s financial statements. Several participants sought greater clarity on income and expenditure details, leading to sharp exchanges between members and the leadership.

As tensions escalated, Shwetha Menon announced her decision to step down as president. She later confirmed that the entire executive committee had also resigned. In a further escalation, Menon said she was leaving not only her leadership position but also her primary membership in AMMA, effectively ending her association with the influential film body.

The crisis is particularly significant because Menon had made history when she became AMMA’s first woman president. Her election was seen as a landmark moment for representation within the Malayalam film industry and had raised expectations of a new chapter for the organisation.

With the executive committee stepping down, attention has now turned to the formation of an interim arrangement and the process for electing a new leadership team. Until then, one of Kerala’s most prominent film organisations faces another period of uncertainty, as members seek to restore stability and confidence within the association.

The latest upheaval comes as AMMA continues to recover from previous controversies that have affected its leadership and public image. Industry observers believe the mass resignation highlights persistent challenges within the organisation and raises questions about its future direction.
