The first round of high-stakes talks between the United States and Iran faced an early setback after Iranian negotiators briefly walked out of discussions in Switzerland, highlighting the fragile nature of efforts to ease tensions between the two countries.
The US delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance, who struck a more conciliatory tone and expressed hope that diplomacy could help improve relations between the two countries. Despite the tense exchanges, negotiators continued to discuss key issues, including sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian funds and broader regional security concerns.
The talks, held at the Bürgenstock resort and mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, were intended to build on recent diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and addressing long-standing disputes. However, the atmosphere became strained after US President Donald Trump issued strong warnings to Tehran, including threats of military action if Iran failed to meet certain demands.
According to reports, Iranian officials refused to participate in a planned joint photo opportunity with the American delegation, describing it as a publicity exercise. Soon after, members of the Iranian team left the venue in protest following Trump’s remarks, although the walkout was temporary and discussions later resumed through mediators.
