Indian Navy gets three new indigenous platforms

PM Modi commissions INS Dunagiri, Sanshodhak and Agray in Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three indigenously built Indian Navy platforms in Kolkata, marking a major milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen self-reliance in defence manufacturing and enhance maritime security.

The three platforms — INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray, have been designed and built in India, reflecting the growing capabilities of the country’s shipbuilding and defence sectors. Their induction into service is expected to significantly enhance the Navy’s operational readiness and support India’s strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region.

INS Dunagiri is a modern stealth frigate equipped with advanced surveillance and combat systems. Designed for a range of naval operations, the warship is expected to play an important role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests and strengthening naval presence across key sea routes.

INS Sanshodhak is a sophisticated survey vessel equipped with advanced hydrographic equipment. The ship will support marine research, seabed mapping and navigation-related activities. Its capabilities are expected to contribute to safer maritime operations and improve understanding of underwater environments critical for both civilian and defence purposes.

INS Agray, another indigenous naval platform, adds further strength to the Navy’s expanding fleet and reflects India’s commitment to modernising its maritime forces through home-grown technologies.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, PM Modi highlighted the importance of self-reliance in defence production and praised Indian engineers, shipbuilders and workers involved in the projects. He said the induction of the platforms demonstrates the success of the government’s efforts to promote domestic manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Defence officials noted that indigenous construction not only reduces dependence on imports but also strengthens India’s technological capabilities and creates employment opportunities within the country. The commissioning of the three platforms is seen as a significant achievement for India’s defence industry and shipbuilding ecosystem.
