Trump considers pulling US troops from Germany

The statement comes amid tensions with Berlin over Iran conflict and NATO commitments

Donald Trump has said he is considering reducing the number of US troops stationed in Germany, following growing tensions between the two countries over the Iran conflict.

The remarks come after a disagreement with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had raised concerns about US actions related to Iran. In response, Trump questioned Germany’s position and suggested that the US may rethink its military presence there.

Germany currently hosts tens of thousands of American troops, making it one of the largest US military bases in Europe. These forces play a key role in supporting NATO operations and maintaining regional security.

Trump indicated that if allies are not fully aligned with US policies, especially on major global issues like Iran, Washington may review its commitments. His comments have sparked concern among European leaders about the future of US military support in the region.

German officials have responded cautiously, emphasising the importance of strong ties with the US and the continued role of NATO in ensuring stability. They have also highlighted the long-standing partnership between the two countries.

The development comes at a time when the US is reviewing its global military deployments, particularly due to rising tensions in the Middle East. Analysts say any decision to reduce troop levels in Germany could have wider implications for European security and NATO readiness.

At the same time, experts point out that discussions about adjusting US troop numbers in Europe are not new and have taken place under previous administrations as well.

No final decision has been announced as yet.
