India plans 62 ships in ₹51,383 cr push

Move aims to boost Aatmanirbhar shipping and cut reliance on foreign vessels

India is set to add 62 new vessels this financial year as part of a major effort to strengthen its shipping sector and become more self-reliant.

Announcing the plan, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the project will involve an investment of about ₹51,383 crore. The goal is to expand India’s shipping capacity and reduce dependence on foreign fleets for transporting goods.

The new additions will include different types of vessels such as container ships, oil and gas carriers, and tugboats. This will help improve the movement of cargo and make supply chains more reliable, especially during global disruptions.

The move comes at a time when international shipping routes are facing uncertainties due to geopolitical tensions. By increasing its own fleet, India hopes to better manage trade and energy transport without relying heavily on other countries.

The government is also encouraging domestic shipbuilding, which is expected to create jobs and support local industries. Officials say Indian shipyards will play a key role in building many of these vessels.

This plan is part of a broader effort to strengthen India’s position in global trade and improve logistics. It also aligns with the government’s focus on building a self-reliant economy.
