Nine people were killed after a sleeper bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida late Wednesday night, turning an overnight journey into a deadly accident. The bus was travelling from Kashmere Gate in Delhi to Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh when the fire broke out near the 33-km milestone close to Dayanatpur village.
The incident took place around 11.30 pm under the Jewar police station area. The bus was carrying around 30 passengers, many of whom were asleep when the fire started. Smoke spread rapidly through the vehicle, leaving passengers with little time to react.
Several passengers tried to escape through the windows as the flames spread. Around 20 passengers were rescued from the bus, while others managed to get out on their own. Some survivors suffered injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Firefighters and police teams were rushed to the spot after receiving information about the blaze. Four fire tenders were deployed to control the flames. The fire was eventually brought under control, but nine passengers were found dead inside the bus.
Police said the victims died from burns and suffocation. Rescue teams continued their work after the fire was extinguished as they searched the damaged vehicle for passengers who may have been trapped inside.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. A preliminary assessment indicated that a fault involving the bus’s air-conditioning system may have triggered a spark. The spark may have caused engine oil to catch fire, allowing the flames to spread rapidly. Officials are examining the vehicle and other evidence before reaching a final conclusion.
The sequence of events before the fire is also being investigated. An FIR registered at Jewar police station reportedly records that passengers noticed a burning smell and alerted the driver and conductor. Police are examining the response of the bus crew and whether the vehicle was stopped quickly after the warning.
The driver and conductor have been arrested in connection with the incident. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators are questioning survivors, examining statements and inspecting the bus to determine whether negligence or safety violations played a role.
The bus was reportedly registered in Bihar and was operating on a long-distance route between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The incident has raised fresh concerns over safety standards in sleeper buses, especially those operating overnight when passengers are asleep.
Sleeper buses have enclosed berths and multiple levels in some configurations, which can make evacuation difficult during an emergency. A fire can also spread quickly through the passenger compartment if combustible materials catch fire. Access to clearly marked emergency exits and properly functioning fire extinguishers can be critical in such situations.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured. The state government announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh to the families of each deceased passenger and ₹50,000 for those injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the loss of lives. The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund will provide ₹2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased passenger and ₹50,000 to those injured.
Authorities are continuing the process of identifying the victims and informing their families. Police and district officials are also coordinating with hospitals where injured passengers were taken.
The Yamuna Expressway, a major road connecting Delhi and Agra, carries a large volume of passenger and commercial traffic. Accidents on the expressway have previously raised concerns about speeding, vehicle safety and emergency response.
In this case, investigators are examining the circumstances specific to the bus fire, including the vehicle’s mechanical condition, the possible source of the blaze and the actions of the crew after the fire was detected.
The final findings will determine whether the fire resulted from a mechanical or electrical fault, a safety violation or another cause. Until then, officials have urged people not to speculate about the incident.
