Kerala recorded a voter turnout of over 78% in the 2026 Assembly elections, showing strong public interest in the state’s political future.
Voting took place across all 140 constituencies on April 9 and was mostly peaceful. People started arriving at polling booths early in the morning, and steady voting continued throughout the day. Despite the heat, long queues were seen in many places.
The final turnout was slightly higher than the last Assembly elections, indicating increased participation. This election is considered important, with a close contest expected between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The BJP-led alliance is also trying to make gains.
A large number of women, young voters, and first-time voters came out to vote. In fact, women turnout was higher than men in many areas, showing strong engagement across different groups.
Some districts like Kozhikode and Palakkad saw turnout above 80%, while a few areas reported slightly lower numbers. Overall, participation remained strong across the state.
Election officials ensured smooth polling by putting security measures in place. Polling booths were monitored closely, and only minor issues were reported.
The high turnout suggests that voters were keen to have their say in a closely fought election. Political parties are now waiting for the results, which will decide the next government in the state.
Vote counting will take place on May 4. The results will show whether the LDF continues in power or if the UDF makes a comeback.
