Bennett, Lapid join hands to challenge Netanyahu

Former Israeli leaders join hands ahead of polls to offer voters an alternative

Two of Israel’s most prominent opposition leaders, Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid, have joined forces ahead of the next national election in a major political move aimed at challenging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The alliance brings together two leaders with different political styles but a shared goal, ending Netanyahu’s long dominance of Israeli politics.

Bennett, a former prime minister with a conservative image, and Lapid, a centrist who also previously served as prime minister, said they would work together to present voters with a stronger and more united alternative.

The decision is important because Israel’s opposition has often been divided into smaller groups, making it easier for Netanyahu and his allies to stay in power.

By combining support from the centre and sections of the right, the new partnership hopes to attract voters frustrated with political instability and repeated election cycles.

Bennett and Lapid have worked together before. In 2021, they led an unusual coalition government that briefly removed Netanyahu from office. That administration later collapsed, allowing Netanyahu to return.

This time, the political atmosphere is even more intense. Israel continues to face security pressures, internal divisions and public debate over the government’s handling of national issues.

Many voters are also tired of constant political deadlock and may be looking for a more stable option.

Opinion polls suggest the new alliance could become a serious challenger, though Israel’s complex coalition system means winning the most seats does not always guarantee power.

Both leaders will now need to convince supporters that old rivalries can be set aside for a larger purpose.
