In a major boost to critical care, AIIMS Delhi has rolled out India’s first portable MRI system, allowing doctors to scan patients without shifting them from their beds.
The new system is particularly useful for patients in ICUs who are too ill to be moved. Earlier, such patients had to be transported to MRI rooms, a process that could delay diagnosis and sometimes worsen their condition. The portable machine removes this challenge by bringing the scan directly to them.
Doctors say this will make a big difference in handling emergencies like strokes and brain injuries, where quick diagnosis is critical. The ability to perform scans immediately can help doctors take faster decisions and improve treatment outcomes.
The device focuses on brain imaging and is best suited for quick assessments. It uses a low magnetic field, which makes it safe and easy to use in hospital settings. However, it is not meant to replace traditional MRI machines, which are used for more detailed scans.
The technology also reduces pressure on hospital resources. Instead of waiting for access to MRI rooms, doctors can carry out essential scans in the ICU itself. This improves efficiency and saves valuable time.
Portable MRI systems are already used in some countries, and their introduction in India reflects a growing focus on patient-friendly innovation. At AIIMS Delhi, doctors believe the system will help improve both speed and safety in critical care.
