Vote counting for the 2026 Assembly elections is in full swing across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry, and early trends are already hinting at major political shifts in several states. The counting began at 8 am with postal ballots, followed by EVM votes, and clearer trends have been emerging through the day.
In West Bengal, the BJP has taken an early lead and is ahead in a large number of seats, putting up a strong challenge to the ruling Trinamool Congress. While the TMC is still in the race, the gap in early trends has drawn attention, making this one of the most closely watched contests.
Assam is showing a more comfortable position for the BJP, which is leading in a majority of seats. The Congress and its allies are trailing, though they continue to hold ground in some regions. If trends continue, the BJP could retain power in the state.
Kerala appears to be heading for a change, with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) leading in early trends. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is trailing, suggesting that voters may be looking for a shift after the current government’s term. However, the margins are still being closely tracked.
Tamil Nadu has turned into an interesting and unpredictable contest. Early trends suggest a strong performance by new entrant TVK, founded by actor Vijay, making the race tighter than expected. Established parties like the DMK and AIADMK are also in the mix, keeping the outcome open.
In Puducherry, the contest remains close, with multiple parties leading in different seats. No clear trend has emerged yet, indicating a fragmented mandate could be possible.
