BJP leads in Bengal, Assam delivers close mandate

Counting trends show a strong BJP surge in Bengal, as well as in Assam

The 2026 Assembly election results are taking shape with clear but contrasting political trends emerging from West Bengal and Assam as counting progresses.

In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a noticeable lead in the evolving results, emerging ahead in a large number of constituencies. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is trailing in comparison to its past dominance but remains competitive in several regions. The Left-Congress alliance continues to have a limited presence and is not a major factor in most constituencies.

The overall picture suggests a significant shift in voter preference, with BJP making strong inroads across rural belts as well as urban pockets. This marks one of the most competitive elections in the state in recent years, with the traditional political balance between TMC and opposition forces being strongly challenged. While trends show a clear BJP advantage, several constituencies remain closely contested, meaning the final outcome is still dependent on remaining rounds of counting.

In Assam, the election has produced a more balanced and fragmented mandate. The BJP remains a leading force in the state, but it faces competition from the Congress and regional parties, which have secured wins in multiple constituencies. Unlike West Bengal, no single party is dominating across all regions, making Assam’s outcome more distributed across political players.

Voter priorities in Assam appear to have been shaped by issues such as employment, development, infrastructure, and governance. These factors have contributed to a mixed result, with different parties gaining support in different districts rather than a uniform statewide wave.
