Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as Assam Chief Minister for a second consecutive term on Tuesday after the BJP-led NDA registered a massive win in the Assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony was held in Guwahati and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, Union ministers and chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office.
The BJP-led alliance secured a comfortable majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly, marking the NDA’s third straight term in the state. The BJP alone won more than 80 seats, recording one of its strongest performances in Assam so far.
Along with Sarma, ministers from alliance partners, including Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front, also took oath as part of the new cabinet.
Speaking after the ceremony, Sarma thanked the people of Assam for their support and said his government would continue focusing on development, infrastructure, welfare schemes and employment generation. He also promised to strengthen investment opportunities and improve connectivity across the state.
Political observers said the election result reflected strong public support for Sarma’s leadership and the BJP’s organisational strength in Assam. During his first term, the government focused heavily on road projects, welfare programmes, law-and-order measures and investment initiatives in the Northeast.
The ceremony turned into a major political event for the NDA, with large crowds gathering in Guwahati and tight security arrangements in place due to the presence of top national leaders.
Sarma has now become one of the BJP’s most influential leaders in the Northeast region. Analysts believe his second term will focus on economic growth, industrial development and expanding Assam’s role as a key gateway to the Northeast.
