Xi hosts Putin in Beijing talks

High-level China-Russia talks take place after Trump’s China visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing for high-level talks that come at a sensitive diplomatic moment, just days after US President Donald Trump’s visit to China. The meeting has drawn global attention amid shifting geopolitical alignments.

The discussions between the two leaders are expected to focus on strengthening economic and strategic ties, with energy cooperation at the centre. One of the key proposals under consideration is the long-delayed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which would significantly boost Russian gas supplies to China if finalised.

Putin’s visit also underscores the steady engagement between Moscow and Beijing, with both sides describing their relationship as a long-term strategic partnership. This is among Putin’s repeated visits to China in recent years, reflecting deepening political and economic coordination between the two countries.

The timing of the visit has added to its significance. Coming soon after high-level US-China interactions, it highlights China’s effort to maintain active engagement with multiple major powers while projecting itself as a stable global actor in an increasingly divided international environment.

China has maintained that it is neutral on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, even as it continues trade and diplomatic ties with Russia. This balancing approach has been closely watched by Western governments, who see the China-Russia partnership as an important factor in global geopolitics.
