Second Hantavirus case found on cruise ship in Spain

Passengers remain under observation after virus cases detected during Spain quarantine

Spanish health authorities have confirmed a second case of hantavirus among passengers from a cruise ship that was placed under quarantine after a suspected outbreak. The development has raised fresh health concerns as officials continue monitoring passengers and crew members connected to the vessel.

According to reports, the infected passengers were identified after showing symptoms linked to hantavirus infection while travelling on the cruise. Health authorities quickly isolated affected individuals and launched medical checks for other passengers who may have been exposed.

The cruise ship was reportedly quarantined after the first suspected case emerged during the journey. Officials said passengers are being closely monitored while health teams carry out contact tracing and further testing.

Hantavirus is a rare viral disease mainly spread through contact with infected rodents, particularly through their urine, droppings or saliva. In severe cases, the virus can affect the lungs and lead to breathing difficulties. Health experts say human-to-human transmission is uncommon in most hantavirus strains.

Spanish authorities said precautionary measures have been strengthened to prevent further spread and ensure passenger safety. Medical teams are also examining whether the infected individuals had any exposure before boarding the cruise ship.

The latest case has increased concern among travellers and health officials, although authorities stressed that the overall public health risk currently remains low. Passengers who may have come into close contact with infected individuals are being kept under observation.

Cruise operators and local health departments are working together to manage the situation and provide medical assistance where required. Officials have not yet released detailed information about the route of the cruise or the nationality of the affected passengers.
