India marked World Environment Day on June 5 with a renewed focus on sustainability and environmental conservation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings on the occasion and called on citizens to strengthen efforts towards building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future.
In his message, Modi stressed the importance of safeguarding natural resources and preserving the environment for future generations. He applauded the efforts of individuals, communities and organisations engaged in activities such as afforestation, waste management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable living.
The Prime Minister said protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that requires active participation from every citizen. He urged people to adopt eco-friendly practices, reduce pollution and contribute to conservation efforts in their daily lives.
Highlighting India’s commitment to sustainable development, Modi said economic progress and environmental protection must go hand in hand. He reiterated the country’s focus on achieving climate goals while ensuring growth and improving the quality of life for its people.
As part of the celebrations, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav launched NaMo Oxygen Parks in Delhi to promote urban greenery and improve air quality. The initiative aims to create green spaces with oxygen-rich plant species, offering residents healthier environments while supporting biodiversity conservation. The minister said such projects reflect the government’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable urban development.
Over the years, India has launched several programmes to promote renewable energy, expand forest cover, conserve water resources and reduce carbon emissions. Initiatives related to clean energy, sustainable infrastructure and waste management continue to play a key role in the country’s environmental agenda.
The day was marked across the country through tree-planting campaigns, cleanliness drives, awareness programmes and community-led activities. Schools, colleges, local bodies and environmental groups organised events to encourage responsible consumption and sustainable lifestyles.
