India, Slovakia elevate bilateral ties to strategic partnership framework

PM Modi's first Slovakia visit boosts cooperation in trade, defence, technology, innovation

India and Slovakia have elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to the Central European nation, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between the two countries.

The announcement was made following talks between Prime Minister Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava. The visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia, underscoring New Delhi’s growing engagement with European partners.

During the discussions, the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and agreed to expand cooperation in key sectors including trade and investment, defence, science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, space, clean energy and education.

Both countries expressed their commitment to enhancing economic engagement and encouraging greater business-to-business collaboration. They also agreed to explore new opportunities in advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and emerging technologies.

PM Modi highlighted India’s rapid economic growth and invited Slovak companies to participate in the country’s development journey. He emphasised the potential for stronger partnerships in innovation, infrastructure and industrial development.

The two sides also discussed global and regional developments and reiterated their support for a rules-based international order. They stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation in addressing shared global challenges.

The leaders also welcomed growing people-to-people ties and agreed to strengthen cultural, educational and academic exchanges. Efforts to promote tourism and mobility between the two countries are also expected to receive renewed attention.

Several agreements and understandings aimed at boosting collaboration in various sectors were announced during the visit. Officials said the upgraded partnership will provide a framework for expanding cooperation across multiple areas of mutual interest.

This  visit to Slovakia, also the very first by an Indian PM, is seen as part of India’s broader outreach to Europe, where New Delhi has been seeking stronger economic and strategic partnerships.
