The Kerala government on Friday presented its revised Budget for 2026-27, outlining an ambitious plan to accelerate economic growth through infrastructure development, port-led industrialisation and job creation.
Presenting the first full Budget of the UDF government, Finance Minister V.D. Satheesan highlighted “Mission Samudra” as a key initiative aimed at transforming Kerala into a major maritime and logistics hub. The government hopes to leverage the state’s long coastline and strategic location to attract investments, generate employment and boost economic activity.
The Budget places significant emphasis on developing ports, logistics parks and related infrastructure to strengthen trade and connectivity. Officials believe the strategy can help diversify Kerala’s economy and create new opportunities for businesses and young job seekers.
Alongside infrastructure projects, the government announced measures focused on entrepreneurship, industrial growth and improving the investment climate. The administration said its objective is to create a more business-friendly environment while maintaining support for welfare programmes and social development initiatives.
For many young people in Kerala, employment remains a major concern. The government has projected that the proposed investments and development projects will help create jobs across sectors, including logistics, manufacturing, services and tourism.
However, the Budget quickly became the centre of political debate. Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan accused the UDF government of merely repackaging several schemes initiated during the previous LDF administration. He alleged that projects launched by the earlier government had been presented under new names without acknowledging their origins.
Vijayan also criticised what he described as an excessive focus on corporate interests, arguing that development policies should place greater emphasis on public welfare and social equity. The UDF government rejected the criticism, maintaining that the Budget provides a fresh vision for Kerala’s economic future and addresses emerging challenges facing the state.
