IIT Delhi tops India in QS rankings again

MIT retains global lead as Indian universities improve worldwide standing

The latest QS World University Rankings 2027 have brought encouraging news for Indian higher education, with IIT Delhi emerging as the country’s highest-ranked institution while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained its position as the world’s top university for the 15th consecutive year.

IIT Delhi climbed to 118th place globally, improving from its previous ranking and matching the best-ever performance by an Indian institution in the prestigious global rankings. The institute retained its position as India’s top-ranked university for the second year in a row.

Globally, MIT continued its dominance at the top of the rankings. It was followed by Stanford University, Imperial College London, the University of Oxford and Harvard University, reflecting the continued strength of leading institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom.

India’s overall performance showed steady progress. A total of 52 Indian institutions featured in the rankings, making India the fifth most represented higher education system in the world. More than half of the Indian universities already included in the rankings improved their positions this year.

Among other Indian institutions, IIT Bombay secured the 134th position globally, while IIT Madras entered the world’s top 200 at 170th place. Several other IITs and universities also registered improvements, highlighting the growing international recognition of Indian higher education.

Education experts say the rankings reflect increasing investments in research, innovation, international collaborations and graduate employability. Universities are also benefiting from efforts to improve academic quality and global engagement.

While no Indian university has yet broken into the global top 100, the latest rankings suggest that Indian institutions are steadily narrowing the gap with leading global universities. As competition intensifies worldwide, the improved showing is being viewed as another positive step in India’s journey towards becoming a major global education hub.
