12 Indians among 13 killed in Qatar blast

Embassy coordinates repatriation as families await victims’ remains anxiously

A powerful explosion at an LNG facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial area has claimed the lives of 13 workers, including 12 Indian nationals, triggering grief among families back home and prompting diplomatic efforts to bring the victims’ remains to India.

According to reports, the blast occurred at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) installation in Ras Laffan, one of the world’s largest energy hubs. The incident also killed one worker from Nepal and left several others injured. Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion, though details remain limited.

The Indian Embassy in Qatar confirmed the deaths and said it is working closely with local authorities and employers to complete formalities related to identification, documentation and repatriation. Officials have also reached out to the families of the deceased and are coordinating assistance.

Many of the victims were employed in technical and industrial roles linked to Qatar’s energy sector. Like thousands of Indians working in the Gulf, they had travelled abroad in search of better economic opportunities and were supporting families back home through their earnings.

News of the tragedy has sent shockwaves through communities in India, particularly in states that have a large migrant workforce in the Gulf region. Relatives of the victims have described the loss as devastating, with several families learning about the deaths through official notifications and media reports.

Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City is a key centre for the country’s LNG production and export operations. The facility plays a vital role in global energy supplies, making safety a critical priority for operators and authorities.

While investigations continue, questions are being raised about the circumstances that led to the explosion and whether additional safety measures could have prevented the tragedy. Officials have not yet released a detailed account of the incident.
