A devastating fire at a residential building in Lucknow has claimed 15 lives, including an engaged couple whose wedding preparations were underway, turning what should have been a time of celebration into a heartbreaking tragedy.
The blaze broke out in a multi-storey building in the city’s Hazratganj area and quickly spread through the structure, trapping residents inside. Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the scene, battling flames and thick smoke as they worked to evacuate occupants.
Among those killed were a young man and woman who were set to get married in the coming months. Their deaths have drawn widespread sympathy, with relatives and neighbours describing the tragedy as unimaginable. Family members who had been planning wedding celebrations are now preparing for funerals instead.
The incident has also raised serious questions about building safety and regulatory oversight. Reports suggest that concerns had previously been flagged regarding the structure, prompting scrutiny of whether safety norms were adequately enforced. Authorities are now examining the approvals granted to the building and whether fire-safety requirements were followed.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as residents tried to escape. Some people reportedly climbed to balconies and windows seeking help while rescue personnel worked against time to reach those trapped inside. Survivors recounted the chaos caused by rapidly spreading smoke, which made evacuation difficult.
The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered an investigation into the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the building’s compliance with safety regulations. Officials have promised strict action if negligence is found.
