Five workers lost their lives after a massive landslide struck a tunnel construction site in Kerala’s Wayanad district, where continuous monsoon rains triggered the collapse of a hill slope on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at an under-construction tunnel project when a large section of earth and rocks suddenly gave way, burying workers and heavy machinery. Rescue teams rushed to the site soon after the collapse and launched a search operation despite persistent rainfall and unstable ground conditions.
Officials said five workers were pulled out from the debris but could not be saved. Rescue personnel continued clearing mud and rocks to ensure no one else remained trapped. The operation involved police, fire and rescue services, local authorities and disaster response teams, who worked in difficult weather conditions.
Authorities believe the relentless monsoon rains weakened the slope, causing the sudden collapse.
