Veteran US Senator Lindsey Graham passed away at the age of 71 after a brief and sudden illness, ending a political career that spanned more than three decades and made him one of the Republican Party’s most recognisable leaders.
According to officials, Graham fell ill at his home in Washington, D.C., on Saturday evening. Emergency responders rushed to the residence, but he could not be revived. Preliminary findings from the medical examiner said he died due to an aortic dissection caused by cardiovascular disease. Authorities have said there is no evidence of foul play.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the agency is assisting local authorities with the investigation. He clarified that the FBI’s involvement is routine in such cases and should not be seen as an indication of suspicious circumstances.
Graham represented South Carolina in the US Senate since 2003 after serving several years in the House of Representatives. Over the years, he became a key voice on defence, national security and foreign policy. His views often shaped debates on issues involving the military, international relations and the judiciary.
Although Graham was an outspoken critic of Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican presidential race, the two later developed a close political relationship. He went on to become one of Trump’s strongest allies and remained an influential figure within the Republican Party.
Just days before his death, Graham had returned from Ukraine, where he met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and expressed support for stronger sanctions against Russia. He was also scheduled to appear on a television programme the following day.
News of Graham’s death prompted tributes from leaders across the political spectrum. President Trump described him as a “true American patriot,” while fellow lawmakers remembered him as a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly for his constituents and the country.
Supporters gathered outside his office and shared messages of condolence on social media, remembering his decades of public service and his outspoken approach to politics. Friends and colleagues recalled his willingness to engage in difficult debates while remaining committed to public life.
