Former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad dies at 74

India observed national mourning as tributes pour in for visionary Qatari leader worldwide

Former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the leader credited with transforming the Gulf nation into a global economic and diplomatic force, passed away at the age of 74. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from world leaders, while India observed a day of national mourning in his honour.

Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, a period during which the country witnessed rapid economic growth, major infrastructure development and increased global influence. He voluntarily stepped down in 2013, handing over power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a rare and peaceful transition of leadership in the region.

During his reign, Qatar emerged as one of the world’s wealthiest nations, driven by its vast natural gas reserves. Sheikh Hamad played a key role in expanding the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, strengthening its economy and raising living standards.

He was also instrumental in establishing Al Jazeera, the influential news network that reshaped media in the Arab world. Under his leadership, Qatar gained prominence in international diplomacy by mediating regional conflicts and strengthening ties with countries across the globe.

India expressed condolences over his passing and announced one day of national mourning as a mark of respect. The national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings, and there were no official entertainment programmes during the mourning period.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences, describing Sheikh Hamad as a visionary leader who made a significant contribution to Qatar’s progress and to strengthening bilateral ties with India. Leaders from across the Middle East and beyond also paid tribute to his role in shaping modern Qatar.

Sheikh Hamad’s leadership transformed Qatar into a major player in global energy markets and international affairs. His policies on education, healthcare, infrastructure and investment laid the foundation for the country’s long-term development and global standing.
